Walk with God
Are You Walking With Him or Asking Him to Walk With You?

"Walk with God" vs. "God, Walk with Me"—Why the Difference Matters
Let’s talk about the phrases “Walk with God” vs. “God, walk with me.” At first glance, they might seem similar, but there’s a huge difference between the two.
I recently had a conversation with someone who struggled with this idea. They said it was difficult to keep up with God and would rather He walk at their pace. And honestly, that kind of thinking is more common than people realize. It’s easy to want God to match our speed, to expect Him to follow us. But that’s not how faith works. God doesn’t conform to our journey—we are called to align ourselves with His.
God is Always With Us—But That’s Not the Same as Him Following Us
Yes, Scripture tells us that God is always with us (Deuteronomy 31:6, Matthew 28:20), but that doesn’t mean He’s walking our way. There’s a difference between God being present and God leading. He is our Shepherd, and a shepherd does not follow the sheep—the sheep follow the shepherd (John 10:27).
If we want to walk with God, that means surrender. It means adjusting our priorities, pace, and direction to match His. We’re not inviting Him on our personal journey; we are stepping into His path.
Who’s Really in Control?
Saying “God, walk with me” assumes that we set the destination and ask God to come along for the ride. But God isn’t a passenger in our lives. He’s the driver.
When we insist that God walk with us on our terms, we risk making Him a background character instead of the leader He’s meant to be. We might end up moving in a direction that feels right in the moment but leads to spiritual stagnation, confusion, or even destruction (Proverbs 14:12).
Spiritual Growth Requires Movement
Some people struggle with this idea because they haven’t built a strong foundation in their faith. They want the rewards of walking with God, but they don’t want the discipline that comes with it. Just like a child must first learn to crawl before they walk, our faith journey requires intentional growth.
If an athlete never trains, they can’t expect to win a race. If we don’t spend time in prayer, in Scripture, in obedience, and in spiritual discipline, we will struggle to keep up with God. And when that happens, it can be tempting to ask Him to slow down instead of pushing ourselves to grow.
But faith doesn’t work that way. God’s path is set, and it’s up to us to follow. The more we align with Him, the more we’ll be able to keep up.
The Hard Truth: Surrender is Necessary
I know this might sound frustrating to some, but that’s not my intention. The goal is to make this distinction clear because it matters. If we don’t understand the difference, we might deceive ourselves into thinking we’re walking with God when, in reality, we’re just asking Him to walk with us while we do our own thing.
If you’re feeling distant from God, ask yourself:
Am I trying to lead, or am I following?
Am I expecting God to meet me where I am, or am I willing to step into where He is?
Have I been resisting change because I don’t want to adjust my pace to match God’s?
The journey isn’t easy, but it’s worth it. Walking with God requires effort, surrender, and trust. But when we do, we find ourselves on the only path that truly leads to life.
